FOSTER FAMILIES
Due to limited space available at the Haven we are always looking for extra assistance from foster carers. The more dogs we can place into temporary care prior to re-homing, the more places we have for dogs who's only alternative is euthanasia.
Also, a number of our dogs that find it difficult adapting to life at the Haven are much happier hanging out with a foster family prior to permanent adoption.
If you are prepared to donate a considerable amount of your time, dedication, and lots of love and special care then please contact us about becoming an F.O.S. foster carer.
Remember it is a big commitment and it's not a job for everyone. However, the honour and sense of purpose you receive as you watch a dog respond to being loved and feeling secure, maybe for the first time in it's life, and in knowing that you helped one more dog find its way into a safe, happy home is overwhelming each time you successfully re-home a dog.
Many people prefer to adopt a rescue dog rather than buy a dog from a breeder or a pet shop because it saves a life and makes room for another dog that would otherwise be euthanased.
Friends of the Shelter rescue dogs go to temporary and permanent homes microchipped , vaccinated & desexed – (the average number of litters a fertile dog can produce in one year is 2, and the average number of puppies in a litter is 6–10, so one female dog and her offspring, can produce 67,000 dogs in 6 years.)
Foster Carer Responsibilities:
* providing shelter, food and health care (with assistance from F.O.S. if required)
* learning about and assessing the dog's temperament, character and abilities
* teach basic commands and obedience training to the dog i.e. sit, come, stay, & the dog ...should be able to walk on a lead.
* socialise with other dogs, people and surroundings
* toilet training
The time will come when the dog in your care will be adopted and it will most likely be heart wrenching, but you must remember that you have given that animal the opportunity to continue it's life with people that will love and adore them.
Show your love – become a Friends of the Shelter foster carer!
